REMARKS:
As part of our ongoing commitment to enhance public safety and improve the quality of life for our residents, the Traffic Engineering Division has been tasked with a comprehensive overhaul of the County's Traffic Calming Program. Since its initiation in 1994, this program has effectively addressed various traffic safety concerns throughout the county; however, with the evolving landscape of our county and increasing traffic safety demands from our citizens, modernizing our approach is essential.
The overhauled program will incorporate best practices from the Federal Highway Association Traffic Calming ePrimer, Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) TrafficWiki, ITE Traffic Calming State of the Practice, ITE Guide to Speed Reduction Techniques, and the Florida Department of Transportation Design Manual Speed Management.
The Traffic Engineering Division is tentatively scheduled to present the proposed Traffic Calming Program to the Board on December 17, 2024. The plan is to have a revamped Traffic Calming program approved and accepted by the Board by July, 2025 and a new contract to reflect the program changes ready for advertisement by August, 2025.
On December 14, 2021, the Board approved the selection of Mercon Construction Company. Contract Y21-1087 was executed on January 6, 2022 in the not-to-exceed amount of $3,911,325, which encompasses construction services related to the installation of Traffic Calming projects throughout Orange County.
