REMARKS: This new License Agreement with the University of Central Florida (UCF) College of Nursing is to provide facility use in the Holden Heights Community Center located at 1201 20th Street, Orlando, Florida 32805. They will use space to conduct a study focused on fall-risk and balance in older adults through the utilization of assessments and surveys. The study aims to determine the effectiveness of an exercise intervention program to reduce fall-risk and enhance balance in older adults residing in the community.
The UCF College of Nursing EMBRACE Lab at the Pine Hills Community Center, will host approximately 13 senior Orange County Residents in EMBRACE Lab interventions.
Participants: Orange County residents at least 60 years of age, with a score of “cognitively intact” on a Mini-Mental State Exam, who can stand without assistance. These participants will be recruited from the Pine Hills Community Center Senior Program, and no other recruitment or outreach will occur for this program beyond this group.
Frequency: Participants will participate in a week-long course in exercise and fitness, wellness, and fall prevention, then receive a fitness tracker to keep track of their follow-up activities on their own. This group will then reconvene every Friday at the Holden Heights Community Center for a period of nine months to assess progress and reinforce lessons learned and each participant will receive a $50 gift card incentive for each Friday session in which they participate.
Interventions: Participants will learn from experts the type and duration of exercises they can perform in their daily lives, without access to additional equipment, and will be provided with education around nutrition, wellness, and socialization. A special emphasis of this project is fall prevention - with exercises professionally designed around this principle.
Research: In addition to assisting to health improvement and avoiding future fall risks, the program will also produce academic research on behalf of the UCF College of Nursing to assist healthcare providers in the community in increasing health stability of other senior Orange County residents.
This program is not funded by the County, and the agency has agreed to report outcomes associated with this program to Community Action Division staff.
The Board desires that the community centers owned and managed by the County be used in a manner that publicly benefits the County’s residents and has designated the Manager of the Community Action Division to be responsible for arranging, managing, and supervising the public use of the County’s community centers for the County’s residents.
