PROJECT: Vision Zero Action Plan and Adoption of Resolution
PURPOSE: This discussion is to address the adoption of the Vision Zero Action Plan, which implements the safe systems approach and strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. The goal of Vision Zero is to integrate safety principles during the planning and implementation of transportation programs and projects countywide.
On August 9, 2022, the Board took a significant step by adopting a resolution to develop a Vision Zero Action Plan - a comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing transportation safety in Orange County. In 2023, MetroPlan Orlando secured a $3.8 million federal Safe Streets for All grant to address serious safety concerns within the region. These funds are being utilized to cover the cost of coordinated Vision Zero Action Plans in their three-county service area and twenty-two municipalities, including Orange County, with the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries and creating safer roads for both the 2.2 million residents and 75 million tourists who visit Central Florida annually.
