PROJECT: Solar Panel Donations
PURPOSE: The purpose of this memo is to request approval of three items to facilitate the donation of 15-year-old solar panels from the roof of the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) that are being replaced as part of an active capital improvement project. These solar panels were originally installed on the rooftop of the OCCC North/South building in 2009 in partnership with Orlando Utilities Commission and funded by a federal grant. They are being removed and replaced as part of a re-roofing project currently underway. As such, more than 5,800 solar panels are being temporarily stored and awaiting disposal. Rather than dispose of these panels in a landfill at significant taxpayer cost or attempt a cumbersome piecemeal auction process, the OCCC has sought a method to dispose of these thousands of solar panels in an innovative and sustainable way that will benefit the community. While these older solar panels are not as efficient as those now available 15 years later, they do still have practical uses in various small-scale applications.
