County School Zone Speed Detection Camera Program. (Traffic Engineering Division)
body
PROJECT: N/A
PURPOSE: State House Bill 657 related to the enforcement of school zone speed limits was approved on May 31, 2023 and was effective July 1, 2023. The new statutory language from the bill authorizes “a county or municipality to enforce the speed limit in a school zone at specified periods through the use of a speed detection system.”
At the December 17, 2024 Work Session, Public Works staff will provide a presentation regarding a potential new County School Zone Speed Detection Camera Program, which is now allowed based on the language from House Bill 657. The presentation will include background information about the potential program, examples of other government entities that have implemented or are implementing similar programs, potential cost models and recommended program framework. The presentation will also include perspectives on the potential program from staff at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and Orange County Public Schools.
Staff will also be presenting a summary of next steps and a related draft schedule for implementing the potential program. Next steps would include creating a new County ordinance, vendor solicitation and public awareness.
Staff will be seeking guidance from the Board of County Commissioners on whether to move forward with the next steps of creating this new program.
