PURPOSE:
On February 21, 2023, Orange County staff and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 5 Secretary John E. Tyler conducted a Board Work Session that discussed a potential expansion of SunRail in combination with potential intercity passenger rail by Brightline. More specifically, the proposed Sunshine Corridor would extend from the Orlando International Airport westwardly to the south International Drive area.
On January 23, 2024, Orange County and FDOT staff, including Secretary Tyler, presented an update on the Sunshine Corridor Project, status of the Transit Concept and Alternatives Review (TCAR) study and ongoing coordination with FDOT and other community stakeholders. An update regarding the transition activities for SunRail was also presented.
Since the presentation on January 23, 2024, the transition agreements were executed with all local funding partners, the TCAR study has been completed, FDOT and the stakeholders met with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in Atlanta and the Project Development and Environment (PD&E) study is being initialized by FDOT.
At the November 19, 2024, Work Session, FDOT District 5 Secretary Tyler will present an update on the Sunshine Corridor Project, including a summary of the recommendations of the completed TCAR study, a summary of the recent meeting with FTA and an update on the next phase PD&E study. An update on the current SunRail transition activities will also be presented.
